Gloriosa is named after the yucca gloriosa plant which can be seen blooming in the scrub and chaparral throughout the Edwards Plateau. These small “shocks” of white flowers emerge every spring and their delicate aroma brings to mind that heavenly scent of Edelzwicker. This style of wine is firmly rooted in Alsace, and dates back to the 1600’s; it allowed for several grape varieties to be blended (in our case, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are not used, but are other varieties which are allowed in this style) and marketed as a wine that was unique and solely Alsatian. As varietal purity and vineyard designations became a producer’s hallmark, a blended wine gave many producers a place for those lots that may not have fit a specific wine program; and thus, Edelzwicker captured all of the varieties, their intrinsic beauty and made something that was distinctive. In an effort to prove the sum is greater than the parts, we have made Gloriosa in the spirit of a true Edelzwicker. The floral, spicy, fruity nature of these three varietals work well together, with Riesling giving an ever richer tropical fruit note to the exotic lychee and rose petal notes from the Gewurztraminer. The Muscat Canelli adds an exotic spice and rounds out the flavors with a touch of citrus blossom. The robust fruit and natural acidity bring youth and a seductive aromatic quality to this wine, while the age bolsters a wonderful oily texture and rich mouthfeel.
