25% Syrah (Newsom Vineyards)
23% Mourvedre (Lost Draw Vineyards)
23% Counoise (Farmhouse Vineyards)
23% Cinsault (Castano Vineyards)
6% Viognier (Lahey Vineyards)
A maverick is literally defined as an unbranded calf, carrying no affiliation or allegiance to anyone or anything, and originating from Samuel Maverick, a cattle baron of the late 1800’s. As we know it today, a maverick is that individual with an independent streak and a tendency to go against the grain. Certainly, all of these varieties in our 2017 Maverick blend have their signature characters and flavors, but when they are blended, the individual grape selections all work in a harmonious movement. Syrah and Mourvedre give tannic strength, while Counoise and Cinsault bring soft berry notes and a delicate tension. The Viognier adds a burst of fruit and helps to round out the palate. The wine itself has an herbal whisper of tarragon and marjoram, intermingled with ripe strawberry and plum notes that carry the sweet spices of barrel aging, while subtle cocoa and coffee aromas strike the final chord. Framed with a bright acidity, this wine is otherwise shrouded in silk, velvet and cashmere. All of the five varieties strike a perfect balance of fruit and French oak complexities. Carter Creek Maverick may reflect a classic Provençal blend, but definitely with a West Texas vibe that hollers, “Giddyup”!
